Towny is a widely-used plugin (or modification) for Project Freedom in which societies are divided into nations, towns, and their residents.
With towny, you are able to claim your own plot of land, referred to as your "town", invite members to it, otherwise known as "residents", and expand your town's claim. With enough money, you may also create a nation and invite other towns settled by other players into it.
This allows you to make formal alliances with players, declare wars, collect taxes, and much more.
